Magdalene Honour Roll of Military Service

We honour the service of the following men and women from the Australian Armed Services. They worked in our name, to defend our values and our freedom.

We also recognise the many men and women from our community who are currently serving. For reasons of security, their names and details are not mentioned here.

 

Private James Ruben Aitchison

Served in the Second 110th Australian General Transport in Darwin 1941 -1945. James was to deploy overseas the day after Singapore fell. His family was very much relieved but appreciate the honourable sacrifices many others made in serving our country overseas.

Sergeant Ronald David Allan, DCM

Sergeant Ronald David Allan enlisted in the Australian Regular Army on 28 May 1959. He served in Malaya, Borneo and did two tours of Vietnam.  Over many operations Sergeant Allan displayed outstanding leadership qualities and gallantry. He was continuously an excellent leader, dependable in all situations, calm and daring in emergencies. He was an inspiration to his platoon and Company and all who have served with him and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM).   The DCM is regard as second only to the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry for Soldiers, Non-Commissioned Officers and Warrant Officers.

Australian Army WW2, July 1940 – Dec 1944. Transport Driver in 3 Reserve Motor Transport Company, Unit 7th RR Battalion. Captured by the Japanese in Singapore 1942 and taken to Sandakan POW Camp, Borneo. He died 25 Dec 1944 aged 23 in Sandakan as a Prisoner of War.

Australian Imperial Forces World War 1, France. January 1916 - 9th May 1917. Edmund was killed in action during the 2nd Battle of Bullecourt, in France Aged 22.

Australian Imperial Forces World War 1, January 1916 - 22nd August 1916. William was integral in starting the Men from Snowy River Cooee March from Delegate to Goulburn but died from pneumonia in Goulburn Base hospital just before embarking, aged 24. He was buried with full military honours in Adaminaby.

Served in the Royal Australian Air Force as an Aircraft Life Support Fitter through the years 2006 - 2013 (7 years). Transitioned from the permanent Air Force to the Reserves and served through the years 2013-2019 (6 years)During this period, I was posted on various exercises namely Exercise Talisman Sabre (Life Support Fitter) and Exercise Hamel (Support Chief Safety Liaison Officer at Forces Command).

Born 1913 in Heddon Greta, NSW and died 1996 in Brisbane, QLD. Served 1940 to 1944 as a Corporal in the Australian Imperial Service in WWII. Served in the 9th Division, 2/13 th Infantry Battalion, enlisted age 25. Was wounded in Tobruk and repatriated back to Australia. Served as a Member of the NSW Legislative Assembly from 1953 to 1973. Served as Member for Fairfield, NSW from 1953 to 1962 and Member for Bass Hill from 1962 to 1973.

Raymond Patrick Earl 

Born: 1916 in Heddon Greta, NSW and died 1940 aged 23. Originally joined the Royal Australian Navy on 21/10/1934 to 20/1/1937 before joining the RAF, Service number 20373. Served in the Royal Airforce Force as a Pilot Officer in WWII 1/1939 to 9/1940. He was 1st pilot and Captain in the RAF, service number 41770. He flew a Handley Page 52 Hampden Bomber. He was killed in action - on the 26/9/1940 along with 11 other bombers he left from their base in Hemwell, UK to attack the German battleship Scharnhorst in Keil, Germany. His body washed up at Onsla, Sweden two months after going missing. He is buried in Kviberg Cemetery, Sweden.

Born 1914 in Heddon Greta, NSW and died 1992 in Picton, NSW. Served 1940 to 1945 as a Warrant Officer in the Australian Imperial Service in WWII. Service Number NX15075. Enlisted age 26. His division marched from Ingleburn to Bathurst for training prior to being deployed. Served in the 9th Division, 2/13th Infantry Battalion (Devils Own) known as the "Rats of Tobruk" he served in the Middle East in the Siege of Tobruk, at El Alamein and later in Borneo and New Guinea. He remained in the Army after the war where he served at the Royal Australian Artillery Barracks Georges Heights, Mosman, NSW. Army Number 2/2288.

Royal Australian Navy. Enlisted 7 August 1933 and discharged 30 November 1945. Served on HMAS Ships Cerberus, Australia, Penguin, Rushcutters, World War II. Passed: 11 July 1985.

Australian Army WWII, service number NX36060. Born 8th January 1919 In Wyalong NSW. Enlisted in Wagga Wagga NSW on the 1st July 1940. Part of the 2/19th Australian Infantry Battalion he became a prisoner of war and worked on the Burma railway. He was discharged on the 13th December 1945. Passed away on the 25th May 1972 at the age of 53.

Australian Army WWII, service number NX36474. Born 11th May 1914 in West Wyalong NSW. Enlisted in Wagga Wagga NSW on the 17th July 1940. Arrived in Singapore on the 15th August 1941 with the 2/30th Battalion. He then became a prisoner of war and was sent to work on the Burma-Thailand railway. He died at the age of 29 on the 21st October 1943. He is buried at Thanbyuzayat War Cemetery, Myanmar.

Born: 1895 in Vic and died: 1961 in WA. Served 1914 to 1918 in WWI as a Private in the Australian Imperial Forces. Enlisted in Caulfield, Vic — age 19, he saw service in Egypt and France (along with brother Thomas). Service Number W66850. He also served in WWII in the Volunteer Defence Forces from 3/1942 to 10/1945.

Born: 1921 in Coledale, NSW and died 1992 in Smithfield, NSW. Served 1942 - 1946 in the Royal Australian Navy in WWII. Service Number S6351. Rank OA 111. Enlisted age 20 on 16/2/1942. Saw service around Papua New Guinea. Discharged 13/5/1946 at HMAS Penguin. Board Member of Smithfield RSL, was made a Life Member in 1987.

Enlisted 19/5/1942. Landed in Jacquinot Bay, New Britain now known as New Guinea. Served in Raboul, The Pacific & Japan. Was also stationed in Hiroshima after the bomb was dropped. Discharged: 5/5/1947.

Australian Imperial Force, WWI. Joined 1915. Fought in Gallipoli in 1915 and in France in 1918. On September 18, 1918, the Australian 13th Battalion, with which he was serving took part in its last offensive action in France, this time around Le Verguier, in the Somme. In this Battle he was wounded by a gunshot wound to the face. Medals for his service, 1914 - 1915 Star, British War Medal and Allied Victory Medal.

Born 1923- Milton is 101 years old. Milton is a veteran who served in WW2 from April 1942- June 1946. Milton commenced fulltime duty with the Militia (CMF) and undertook training with Infantry training battalion, tank training battalion, then qualified as a signaller and transferred to the 2nd Australian Imperial Force. In May 1943 Milton was posted to the 1st Australian Field Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery in Darwin then at 7 Base Ordnance Depot until June 1946.

43rd Australian Infantry Battalion (#1691). Australian Imperial Force. First World War. Volunteered in the military at age 15, later enlisted and sailed from Adelaide on 9 June 1916. Deployed from England to France on 25 November 1916. Five months later, he was wounded in action on 21 April 1917 and died of his wounds in the field at the 2nd A.C.C.S. (Australian Casualty Clearing Station) on 22 April 1917. He was 25 years old. He is buried at Trois Arbres (Three Trees) Cemetery, France.

Leading Signalman AE2 Submarine World War I. Prisoner of War in Turkey. First Submarine to successfully navigate the Turkish straight (The Dardanelles) during the invasion at Gallipoli on 25th April 1915. 83 years later his landscape drawings led to the discovery of the sunken submarine.

Army number QX4576. Enlisted 3rd November 1939. Discharged 11th August 1943. Critically injured in Tobruk from a land mine and suffered until his death in 1966. Very proud to have served as one of the rats of Tobruk.

Born 1938, Served July 1956 - September 1978 in 5RAR "Royal Australian Regiment AKA Tiger Battalion". Fought in Malaya 1959 - 1961, Vietnam 1966 - 1967. Wounded in duty in February 1967. 9 killed, 31 wounded. 9 medals awarded: Active Service Medal, British general service medal, Australian service medal, 4575 Active Service Medal, Defence Force long service Medal, National Medal, Australian defence Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Pingat Jarsa Medal.
